The 2nd Great Depression
 
"At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.  And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them (Jeremiah 18:7-10)."
 
 
Despite distancing America from Christianity and assuring our enemies abroad that America is not a Christian nation, history rebukes this revisionist nonsense and preserves the truth.  According to United States Supreme Court (February 29, 1892), in the case of Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, Justice David Josiah Brewer rendered this decision:
No purpose of action against religion can be imputed to any legislation, state or national, because this is a religious people. This is historically true. From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation.
 
The commission to Christopher Columbus...[recited] that "it is hoped that by God's assistance some of the continents and islands in the ocean will be discovered...."
 
 
The first colonial grant made to Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584...and the grant authorizing him to enact statutes for the government of the proposed colony provided that they "be not against the true Christian faith...."

 

The first charter of Virginia granted by King James I in 1606...commenced the grant in these words: "...in propagating of Christian Religion to such People as yet live in Darkness...."

 
 
Language of similar import may be found in the subsequent charters of that colony...in 1609 and 1611; and the same is true of the various charters granted to the other colonies. In language more or less emphatic is the establishment of the Christian religion declared to be one of the purposes of the grant. The celebrated compact made by the Pilgrims in the Mayflower, 1620, recites: "Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith...a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia...."
 
 
The fundamental orders of Connecticut, under which a provisional government was instituted in 1638-1639, commence with this declaration: "...And well knowing where a people are gathered together the word of God requires that to maintain the peace and union...there should be an orderly and decent government established according to God...to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the gospel of our Lord Jesus which we now profess...of the said gospel is now practiced amongst us."
 
 
In the charter of privileges granted by William Penn to the province of Pennsylvania, in 1701, it is recited: "...no people can be truly happy, though under the greatest enjoyment of civil liberties, if abridged of...their religious profession and worship...."
 
 
Coming nearer to the present time, the Declaration of Independence recognizes the presence of the Divine in human affairs in these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights....appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions....And for the support of this Declaration, with firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
 
 
...We find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth...because of a general recognition of this truth [that we are a Christian nation], the question has seldom been presented to the courts....There is no dissonance in these declarations. There is a universal language pervading them all, having one meaning; they affirm and reaffirm that this is a religious nation. These are not individual sayings, declarations of private persons: they are organic utterances; they speak the voice of the entire people.
 
 
While because of a general recognition of this truth the question has seldom been presented to the courts, yet we find that in Updegraph v. The Commonwealth,  it was decided that, Christianity, general Christianity, is, and always has been, a part of the common law....not Christianity with an established church...but Christianity with liberty of conscience to all men.
 
 
And in The People v. Ruggles, Chancellor Kent, the great commentator on American law, speaking as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New York, said: "The people of this State, in common with the people of this country, profess the general doctrines of Christianity, as the rule of their faith and practice....We are a Christian people, and the morality of the country is deeply engrafted upon Christianity, and not upon the doctrines or worship of those impostors [other religions]."
 
 
And in the famous case of Vidal v. Girard's Executors, this Court...observed: "It is also said, and truly, that the Christian religion is a part of the common law...." 
 
 
If we pass beyond these matters to a view of American life as expressed by its laws, its business, its customs and its society, we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth. Among other matters note the following: The form of oath universally prevailing, concluding with an appeal to the Almighty; the custom of opening sessions of all deliberative bodies and most conventions with prayer; the prefatory words of all wills, "In the name of God, amen"; the laws respecting the observance of the Sabbath, with the general cessation of all secular business, and the closing of courts, legislatures, and other similar public assemblies on that day; the churches and church organizations which abound in every city, town and hamlet; the multitude of charitable organizations existing everywhere under Christian auspices; the gigantic missionary associations, with general support, and aiming to establish Christian missions in every quarter of the globe.
 
 
These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation....we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth.
 
 
A commentary on the 1892 case, Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, summarized:
Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian.
 
Having established this foundational truth, we press on to demonstrate that throughout our history, America has turned time and again to our Great Benefactor, the Lord Jesus Christ, in times of national trial and distress. We looked to His propitious smiles to be upon our national discourse and endeavors.
 
 
For the sake of brevity, I quote from one proclamation. There are several more that can be cited, but this is indicative of America's response to war, trial, adversity, and struggle. On November 16, 1814, President James Madison issued a Proclamation of a National Day of Public Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer:
The two Houses of the National Legislature having by a joint resolution expressed their desire that in the present time of public calamity and war a day may be recommended to be observed by the people of the United States as a day of public humiliation and fasting and of prayer to Almighty God for the safety and welfare of these States, His blessing on their arms, and a speedy restoration of peace, I have deemed it proper by this proclamation to recommend that Thursday, the 12th of January next, be set apart as a day on which all may have an opportunity of voluntarily offering at the same time in their respective religious assemblies their humble adoration to the Great Sovereign of the Universe, of confessing their sins and transgressions, and of strengthening their vows of repentance and amendment. They will be invited by the same solemn occasion to call to mind the distinguished favors conferred on the American people in the general health which has been enjoyed, in the abundant fruits of the season, in the progress of the arts instrumental to their comfort, their prosperity, and their security, and in the victories which have so powerfully contributed to the defense and protection of our country, a devout thankfulness for all which ought to be mingled with their supplications to the Beneficent Parent of the Human Race that He would be graciously pleased to pardon all their offenses against Him; to support and animate them in the discharge of their respective duties; to continue to them the precious advantages flowing from political institutions so auspicious to their liberties, civil and religious; and that He would in a special manner preside over the nation in its public councils and constituted authorities, giving wisdom to its measures and success to its arms in maintaining its rights and in overcoming all hostile designs and attempts against it; and, finally, that by inspiring the enemy with dispositions favorable to a just and reasonable peace its blessings may be speedily and happily restored.
 
Given at the city of Washington, the 16th day of November, 1814, and of the Independence of the United States the thirty-eighth. James Madison.
 
From Colonial times to the Revolution War to the Civil War and throughout most of our nation's pilgrimage, the Triune God of the Bible was sought, prayed to, and acknowledged in the public life of our nation. When the going got tough, America fell to her knees, rose up and did whatever it took to preserve and pass on a heritage of freedom. This pattern remained true until about 1929. That fateful year hosted a national incident, which shook America to its economic and moral core. The impact of this particular event has been felt to this very day, though the manifestation of its influence has changed. What was this momentous occurrence? It became known as The Great Depression.
 

In essence, the "Great Depression" can be traced to the FED. They manipulated the money supply to create an economic crisis and then used it to gain mastery over the producers in society. The same basic scam is taking place under our watch. The Obama administration is using the current economic debacle to grow government at the expense of our liberties. With the stroke of many pens, the private sector of our nation is becoming co-opted by a massive power grab orchestrated by our federal government. From the Stimulus Plan to Bail-out programs to Cap and Trade to the government takeover of the auto and financial institutions to national healthcare and a host of other travesties, the Obama administration socialistic utopia marches on.
 
In an article written by Bill Denman called "The Great Depression, Are We Repeating It?" this tyrannical process is explained:
 

The FED did (in 1929) exactly what they (Obama administration) are doing today. They bought government securities and the funds used for these purchases were used to fund government make-work projects such as the National Industrial Recovery Act (NRA), Works Projects Administration (WPA), Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC), etc. Today, Obama plans to rebuild the infrastructure of the U.S. -where will he get the funds? -the FED will simply create them and lend them to government.
  

 
Mr. Denman reports the fall-out of this economic folly in 1929:
 

Between 1929 and 1934, 8,734 banks failed; that's an average of 1,747 per year and there weren't nearly as many banks then as there are now. Unemployment rose to 25%. (it's currently 13.5%, not the bogus 7.2% the government is telling us). Of course high unemployment means less tax revenue for government and there was a heavy deficit. On June 30, 1930, the debt was $16,185,000,000. On June 30, 1931, the debt stood at $16,801,000,000 and continued to rise for the rest of the year.
 

 Kevin Swanson commenting on the 2009 "Great Depression" as compared to 1929 states:
 

 
 

It's the worst rise in unemployment since 1945. And we just faced the worst annualized drop in the stock market since 1932. We're shaping up for a 'perfect storm.' Comparing ourselves with FDR's scenario, we're facing 10X the debt, 3X the socialism, far less global economic resilience, far less room to grow on technological productivity, and far less national character than anything FDR had to work with. Sorry BO (Barack Obama).  


 

Though this explains some of the economic and social comparisons associated with Depressions 1 and 2, for the purpose of this article, it does not fully clarify the spiritual and moral impact the Great Depression left upon America's experiment with liberty. For the first time since our inception as a nation, during a national tragedy, Americans turned to government, instead of God for our recovery. And true to form, we never fully recuperated as a free nation.
 
From that time forward, our government developed to become an all-consuming, all-encompassing entity in America. As a consequence, the state-run media invades every aspect of our lives with perpetual governmental plans of increased intrusions. Government as Savior programs flourish like weeds. Starting with the Great Depression to Johnson's New Deal to our current economic malaise, the role of government has increased exponentially to the chagrin of many in our nation.
 
Rahm Emanuel, Obama's Chief of Staff, believes, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before." It has been this mentality associated with Communism, Socialism, and all such totalitarian worldviews that has led our nation from freedom and dependence upon God to governmental dependence and the subsequent tyranny that is beginning to raise its ugly head.

 
The only question that remains is will America "waste" this "crisis" to not only end the failures of the "Great Depression" of 2009, but will we finally repent of our national idolatry? The "Great Depression" of 1929 began our national betrayal against heaven in the land of the free and the home of the brave. It was at this critical time in our history, the American "Exodus" commenced. Eventually over time, Almighty God went from being our national benefactor and government our servant to God is irrelevant and government is our new master. This idolatry and governmental encroachment has an unquenchable appetite. It thirsts for more power, money, and control. It is the nature of the beast. It knows no bounds, but seeks expansion with each passing day.
 
Voices from the past come back to haunt us, expose our folly, and point us back to the truth. William Penn stated, "Men must be governed by God, or they will be ruled by tyrants."  Thomas Jefferson declared, "Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God."  The Obama administration is the culminating bitter fruit of what began in 1929. The prophet Jeremiah warned, "Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited (Jeremiah 17:5, 6)."
 
The only way America can cage the beast that is devouring us and our children's future is for national repentance. Perhaps it is time to draft a new proclamation. Possibly, it could be based upon Hosea the prophet, which he crafted thousands of years ago. He wrote:
 
O Israel, (America) return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. Asshur shall not save us; (No earthly power from within our borders or from without can rescue us) we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
 
I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein (Hosea 14:1-9)."
 
It is through this means that America can experience the blessing of putting our trust where it rightfully belongs. Notice the contrast in this passage quoted previously to the man or nation who trusts in God rather than man. "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit."
 
This is our national heritage that we have forsaken. Currently, tyrants strut freely as that which is vile is exalted in our beleaguered nation (Psalm 12:8). By God's grace, we can return from the land of self-imposed bondage. If not in our lifetime, perhaps one day in the future our posterity can say with great confidence and joy once again, "Blessed is the nation, whose God is the Lord."
